“We have carefully analysed the dynamics that led to the deaths of four Roma children in Livorno and we are now able to affirm that it was a case of racial murder. The murderers threw a petrol bomb and then ran away,”  say the leaders of Gruppo EveryOne, Roberto Malini, Matteo Pegoraro and Dario Picciau.

The representatives of Gruppo EveryOne explain that there is evidence and testimonies to back up their claim, and ask for the immediate release of the parents of the young victims of the fire that broke out among the huts under a flyover in the suburbs of Livorno on the night between Friday 10th and Saturday 11th August.

As well as witness statements and claims of responsibility from a group of racists, the fireman found a molten bottle neck among the ashes of the huts. Glass cannot melt in a fire (500 degrees centigrade), but does melt in the case of a Molotov cocktail (petrol reaches a temperature of 2200 degrees centigrade and glass melts after a temperature of 1200) In spite of this evidence, the authorities have decided not to look for the killers (a group of local people from Livorno maybe) and instead to imprison the fathers of the young victims, Victor Lacatus and Menjii Clopotar. Separated from their wives, who are under house arrest in Cecina (one of them in a psychological condition that deteriorates day by day), the two men are still detained in prison. Victor, devastated by pain over his loss, and worn out after the hardships of imprisonment, has attempted suicide twice. Menjii has run out of strength . In spite of this, the magistrates are keeping them in jail. “They are treating them like animals” say the leaders of Gruppo EveryOne.

They have been accused of “abandonment of minors” because they chased after the killers, and when they got back they found the huts on fire. It was no ordinary fire, but an impenetrable wall of fire, caused by a petrol bomb. Obviously the accusation is unfounded, it is the umpteenth violation of the Gypsies human rights in an Italy that is proving to be more and more racist. If we consider the level of discrimination against Gypsies in Italy, we must expect for them the maximum sentence, and a long detention in inhumane conditions, seeing Italian prisons are authentic concentration camps for the Gypsies, as reported by Amnesty International.

The pressure on the parents is terrible and there is a real risk that they will be forced to withdraw their statements and confess to any crime in order to interrupt the persecution in any way possible. “They lost their children while trying to protect them”, Jasmine, a nomad tells us in tears, “but they threw them into prison as though they were criminals”.

The city seems prey to hatred against the Gypsies. At the children’s funeral many people, instead of offering their sympathies, expressed contempt. Some even said. ”Just as well, that’s four Gypsies less.”

Gruppo EveryOne is leading an international campaign pressing for the intervention of politicians, intellectuals, human rights organizations and activists. We are in constant contact with the mayor, and the town council, we have sent the results of our investigations to the authorities (a courageous newspaper did publish our report, while others papers and TV channels, even Left-wing ones, have ignored our findings and criticised the parents). One of our leaders has been subject to heavy intimidation, which is a further sign of arrogance and prejudice.

Considering the gravity of the case, Gruppo EveryOne, has urged Avvocato Callaioli, the lawyer, to obtain permission for a well-known (and courageous) psychiatrist, Dr Anna Maria Davoli Cassanese, to visit the murdered children’s fathers to see whether their psychiatric condition is compatible with imprisonment. The lawyer knows how urgent it is to put in a request to the magistrate so that precious time is not wasted and the assessment is carried out as soon as possible.

It is time Italy stopped its persecution of the Gypsies, persecution that has lowered their life expectancy to the age of 47, compared to 80 for Italian citizens: in other words, a genocide.

The tragedy of the Gypsy parents appears even sadder when we consider that both the Lacatus and the Clopotar families underwent numerous deportations during the Holocaust where parents and children were gassed in Auschwitz and other death camps. Members of both families underwent interrogation and were unjustly imprisoned. The judges had already written out their sentence on the grounds of the prejudice that had surrounded the Gypsies of Europe for centuries.

Today we can prove that we are different. Gruppo EveryOne and

the “Amici degli Angeli”, the group of associations, activists, intellectuals, political figures and everyday people who have got involved in the case of the Gypsy children, have initiated an international petition for the release of the parents of the young victims of the fire in Livorno.

"Abbiamo analizzato con attenzione le dinamiche che hanno condotto alla morte dei quattro bambini Zingari a Livorno e oggi siamo in grado di affermare che si e' trattato di un omicidio razziale. Gli assassini hanno colpito con una bottiglia incendiaria e poi si sono allontanati". Lo affermano i leader del gruppo EveryOne, Roberto Malini, Matteo Pegoraro e Dario Picciau.

I rappresentanti del gruppo Everyone spiegano che, a conforto della loro tesi esistono prove, testimonianze e indizi e chiedono l'immediata scarcerazione dei genitori delle piccole vittime del rogo divampato tra le baracche sotto un cavalcavia alla periferia di Livorno nella notte tra venerdi' 10 e sabato 11 agosto. Oltre alle testimonianze e alla rivendicazione di un gruppo di razzisti, i vigili del fuoco hanno trovato fra le ceneri delle baracche un collo di bottiglia fuso. Il vetro non può fondere in un incendio (500 gradi centigradi), ma fonde nel caso di una bomba molotov (la benzina raggiunge i 2200 gradi centigradi e la fusione del vetro comincia dopo i 1200 gradi). Nonostante le prove, le autorità hanno deciso di non cercare gli assassini (forse un gruppo di cittadini di Livorno) e di imprigionare i padri delle piccole vittime, Victor Lacatus e Menji Clopotar. Separati dalle mogli, che si trovano agli arresti domiciliari a Cecina (una di loro in condizioni psichicehe che peggiorano ogni giorno), i due uomini sono ancora in prigione. Victor, distrutto dal dolore della perdita e sfinito dalla durezza della detenzione, ha tentato il suicidio due volte. Menji è allo stremo delle forze. Nonostante ciò, i magistrati li tengono in carcere. "Li trattano come bestie," hanno detto i leader del Gruppo EveryOne.

"Sono stati accusati di abbandono di minori perché hanno inseguito gli assassini e al ritorno hanno trovato le baracche in fiamme. Non si trattava di un incendio di poco conto, ma di un muro impenetrabile di fuoco, causato da una bomba incendiaria. Naturalmente l'accusa è infondta, l'ennesima violazione dei Diritti Umani degli Zingari e dei Sinti in un'Italia sempre più razzista. Se consideriamo il livello di discriminazione che colpisce gli Zinagri in Italia, dobbiamo aspettarci per loro il massimo della pena, una lunga detenzione in condizioni disumane, perché le carceri italiane sono veri lager per gli Zingari, come ha denunciato Amnesty International.

Le pressioni sui genitori sono terribili e vi è il rischio che siano costretti a ritrattare la testimonianza e confessare qualsiasi colpa pur di interrompere in qualsiasi modo la persecuzione. "Hanno perso i loro bambini cercando di proteggerli" dice fra le lacrime la nomade Jasmine,"ma li hanno messi in progione come se fossero criminali".

La città sembra in preda all'odio contro gli Zingari. Al funerale dei bimbi molte persone anziché cordoglio manifestavano disprezzo. Qualcuno ha detto: 'Meglio così, quattro zingari in meno'.

Il Gruppo EveryOne sta conducendo una campagna internazionale per sollecitare l'intervento di politici, intellettuali, organizzazioni per i Diritti Umani e attivisti. Comunichiamo costantemente con il sindaco e la giunta comunale, abbiamo inviato i risultati delle nostre indagini alle autorità (un organismo di stampa coraggioso, comunque, li ha pubblicati, mentre gli altri giornali e le televisioni, anche quelli di sinistra, fanno passare sotto silenzio le nostre rivelazioni e mettono in cattiva luce i genitori). Uno dei nostri leader ha subito pesanti intimidazioni, che sono un ulteriore segno di arroganza e pregiudizio.

Considerata la gravità del caso, il gruppo EveryOne ha chiesto con forte preoccupazione all'Avvocato Callaioli che sia permesso a una psichiatra di chiara fama (e di grande coraggio), la dottoressa Anna Maria Davoli Cassanese, di visitare i padri dei bimbi assassinati per constatare se le loro condizioni psichiche siano compatibili con la detenzione. L'avvocato sa quanto sia urgente sollecitare il Gip perché non si perdano ora preziose e la perizia sia effetuata subito.

E' ora che l'Italia interrompa la persecuzione contro gli Zingari, una persecuzione che ha abbassato la loro speranza media di vita a soli 47 anni, contro gli 80 dei cittadini italiani: un genocidio. La tragedia dei genitori Zingari appare ancora più triste se si considera che sia la famiglia Lacatus che la famiglia Clopotar subirono numerose deportazioni durante l'Olocausto e bambini e genitori furono gassati ad Auschwitz e in altri lager. Membri delle due famiglie subirono interrogatori e furono incarcerati ingiustamente e i giudici avevano già scritto la loro condanna, sulla base di un pregiudizio che colpiva da secoli gli Zingari in europa.

Oggi possiamo dimostrare  che siamo cambiati. Il Gruppo EveryOne e gli 'Amici degli Angeli', il gruppo di associazioni, attivisti, intellettuali, personalita' politiche e gente comune che si sono riuniti attorno al caso dei bambini Zingari, hanno promosso una petizione internazionale per la liberta' dei genitori delle piccole vittime del rogo di Livorno.
