The international campaign for Sulukule promoted by EveryOne Group (which is being debated both in the European Council and in the Turkish Parliament) finds itself an important ally, an ally our group has worked in close collaboration with in the difficult appeals for the emancipation of the Rrom people in Europe: the European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC).
Just when the appeals of the 3000 Rroms of Sulukule (direct descendants of the Rrom community that arrived in Turkey in the 11th Century and settled there in the 15th ) seemed to be getting nowhere and the town authorities had already planned the clearance of the historical district for early February 2008, the “Save Sulukule” petition has reawakened a great deal of attention towards the case.
The local press has contacted us several times and authoritative voices have been raised to speak out against the destruction of this historical site - the oldest and most precious testimony of the Rroms’ arrival in present day Istanbul, where their settlement still exists in the Fatih district. The intervention of the European Roma Rights Centre, together with the petition presented by EveryOne to the Turkish Parliament, the European Parliament and the United Nations, could well prove decisive. ERRC, with its partners in Turkey H.C.A. and EDROM, has decided to support the civil case filed by the Rroms of Sulukule against the Fatih and Istanbul municipalities, and against the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (who approved the project) and ask that the clearance of the area and the rebuilding plan be stopped. ERRC will help finance the lawsuit as part of the European Union’s “Promotion of the Rights of the Rroms in Turkey” project. ERRC’s actions in Turkey are supported by the European Commission, by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and the Open Society Institute. EveryOne Group will follow the developments of the case very carefully, supporting every intervention and promoting an awareness in the institutions and public of the historical and civil importance of the Sulukule site. In the meantime we can be satisfied with the first concrete result: the clearance of Sulukule, originally planned for early February, has been postponed “until further notice”.

Saving Sulukule and the oldest Rrom community in the world means saving a piece of the history of our world and stopping a serious case of oppression towards the Turkish Rroms. It means handing down an ancient tradition to future generations. But we must act now, by sending emails, postcards and letters of protest. La campagna per salvare Sulukule registra i primi risultati importanti
La Campagna per Sulukule, promossa a livello internazionale dal Gruppo EveryOne e attualmente discussa sia in sede di Consiglio Europeo che presso il parlamento e il governo turco, trova un importante alleato, con cui il nostro gruppo intrattiene ormai stretti rapporti di collaborazione nelle difficili istanze di emancipazione del popolo Rrom in Europa: l'European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC). Quando ormai le rivendicazioni dei 3000 Rrom di Sulukule, discendenti diretti delle comunità Rrom che giunsero in Turchia nell'XI secolo e vi si stanziarono nel XV, sembravano lettera morta e le autorità cittadine avevano già pianificato per l'inizio di febbraio 2008 lo sgombero dello storico quartiere, ecco che la petizione "Save Sulukule" ha risvegliato una notevole attenzione intorno al caso. I media locali ci hanno contattato a più riprese e voci autorevoli si sono levate per dire no allo scempio del sito storico, la testimonianza più antica e preziosa dell'arrivo dei Rrom nell'attuale Istanbul, dove il loro quartiere esiste ancora, nel comune di Fatih. Ma l'intervento dell'European Roma Rights Centre, insieme alla mozione presentata dal Gruppo EveryOne al Parlamento turco, a quello europeo e alle Nazioni Unite, potrebbe risultare decisivo. ERRC, con i suoi partner in Turchia H.C.A. e EDROM, ha deciso di appoggiare la causa civile intentata dai Rrom di Sulukule contro le municipalità di Fatih e Istanbul, oltre che nei confronti del Ministro della Cultura e del Turismo (che ha approvato il progetto) affinché siano annullati i piani di sgombero e di ristrutturazione dell'area di Sulukule. ERRC sosterrà finanziariamente la vertenza, nell'àmbito del progetto dell'Unione Europea "Promozione dei diritti dei Rrom in Turchia". Le azioni dell'ERRC in Turchia sono appoggiate dalla Commissione Europea, dall'Agenzia Svedese di Sviluppo Internazionale (SIDA) e dall'Open Society Institute. Il Gruppo EveryOne seguirà con estrema attenzione gli sviluppi del caso, sostenendo ogni intervento e favorendo la conoscenza da parte delle istituzioni e del pubblico riguardo all'importanza storica e civile del sito di Sulukule. Intanto possiamo registrare con soddisfazione il primo risultato concreto: lo sgombero di Sulukule, previsto per l'inizio di febbraio, è slittato "a data da destinarsi".

Salvare l'antico sito Rrom di Sulukule e impedire che i Rrom che vi abitano siano sgomberati significa salvare un pezzo di Storia del nostro mondo, impedire un grave abuso sui Rrom della Turchia e permettere che un'antica tradizione si tramandi alle generazioni future. E' necessario agire subito, inviando e-mail, cartoline e lettere di protesta, copiando il testo della pedizione e aggiungendo messaggi rivolti alle autorità turche: "No alla distruzione di Sulukkule", "No allo sgombero dei Rrom dal quartiere di Sulukkule", "Il quartiere di Sulukkule e i suoi abitanti Rrom sono patrimonio della Storia e dell'umanità" ecc.
