Iran – Gottardi: “Solana must intervene to save
the lives of the young Iranians in danger of being hung”
“The European Parliament (after a resolution put forward by the People’s Party, Socialists, Liberal Democrats and the moderate Right (UEN) and approved on January 31st ) has taken up the request to intervene presented by EveryOne Group in the petition www.petitiononline.com/irangay: a clear condemnation of the executions, repression, ethnic and religious discrimination being carried out in Iran, “particularly since the presidential elections of June 2005 “Without progress in these areas”, warns the European Parliament – that expressed ‘deep concern’ – “it will not be possible to reach an agreement of cooperation with the European Union”. The EU Parliament asked the Iranian authorities to honour their international obligations in this matter, by guaranteeing all citizens their civil rights and political freedom, and stopping capital punishment, torture and executions - particularly those carried out against minors. On January 30th we received news that the Minister of Justice in Iran, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi (the EveryOne petition is also addressed to him) established through a decree that executions in Iran will no longer be carried out in public. The decree also foresees a ban on the publication of photos and the broadcasting of scenes of the executions. This is a clear symptom of the embarrassment the Iranian Government is feeling in the face of the indignation aroused in the international community, but it is also the demonstration that the majority of Iranians are against the horrors of capital punishment and stoning, and that only a few extremists consider torture and flogging admissible methods.
On February 4th, EveryOne submitted a request to Javier Solana, the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, asking for Europe to take a further courageous step and ask Amadhinejad for Hamzeh and Loghman’s release. Yesterday EveryOne Group launched an appeal to Mr Javier Solana, the EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, to ask the Iranian President Amadhinejad for the immediate release of Hamzeh Chavi and Loghman Hamzehpour, the two young men of 18 and 19 arrested last January 23rd in Sardasht, Iranian Azerbaijan, and accused of “mohareb” (enemies of Allah) and “lavat” (sodomy), crimes punishable by hanging.
“We appreciated the report that Mr Solana presented to the European Parliament a few days ago on relations with Iran. As in the resolution we approved we firmly condemned the death sentences and executions, I ask Mr Solana to support EveryOne’s request, and ask the Iranian President to release the two boys.”
“If the Iranian President grants this request, Iran will give a fine signal of wishing to communicate with Europe and respect the resolution adopted by the United Nations for a moratorium on all executions. Sparing the lives of Hamzeh and Loghman could be the first step for doing away with all forms of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment that a country like Iran does not deserve to see as part of its legal system.”

la vita dei giovani iraniani a rischio di impiccagione”
“Il Parlamento europeo, con una risoluzione proposta da Popolari, Socialisti, Liberaldemocratici e destra moderata (Uen), approvata in questi giorni (il 31 gennaio scorso) a Bruxelles, ha risposto alla richiesta d’intervento presentata dal Gruppo EveryOne attraverso la petizione www.petitiononline.com/irangay: un’aperta condanna alle esecuzioni, alle repressioni e alle discriminazioni etniche e religiose perpetrate in Iran, “specialmente dalle elezioni presidenziali del giugno 2005”. “Senza progressi in questi campi,” ammonisce il Parlamento Europeo – che ha parlato di “profonda preoccupazione” – “non sarà possibile avere un accordo di cooperazione con l'Unione Europea”. L'Aula comunitaria ha chiesto alle autorità iraniane di onorare i propri obblighi internazionali in materia, garantendo a tutte le persone il diritto di esercitare i propri diritti civili e le libertà politiche, e fermando le sentenze capitali, le torture e le esecuzioni, in particolare quelle eseguite contro minorenni. Ed è del 30 gennaio la notizia che il capo supremo della magistratura iraniana, l'ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi – destinatario anche lui della petizione di EveryOne – ha stabilito tramite un decreto che le esecuzioni in Iran non si terranno più pubblicamente. Il decreto prevede inoltre la messa al bando della pubblicazione di fotografie e della trasmissione di immagini relative alle esecuzioni capitali. Un sintomo palese dell’imbarazzo del Governo Iraniano di fronte allo sdegno della comunità internazionale, ma soprattutto la dimostrazione che il popolo iraniano per la maggior parte è contrario all'orrore delle condanne a morte e alla lapidazione, e che solo pochi fondamentalisti ritengono che tortura e fustigazione siano strumenti leciti.
Il 4 febbraio il Gruppo EveryOne ha presentato una richiesta a Javier Solana, Alto Rappresentate per la politica estera e di sicurezza dell'Unione Europea, per far sì che l'Europa compia un passo ulteriore, chiedendo con coraggio ad Amadhinejad la liberazione di Hamzeh e Loghman. La delegazione italiana del PSE (www.delegazionepse.it) ha appoggiato ufficialmente la richiesta, con un intervento della deputata europea Donata Gottardi, che pubblichiamo”.

Ieri il Gruppo EveryOne ha lanciato un appello all’Alto Rappresentate per la politica estera e di sicurezza, Javier Solana, perché chieda al presidente iraniano Amadhinejad l’immediata scarcerazione di Hamzeh Chavi e Loghman Hamzehpour, i due ragazzi di 18 e 19 anni arrestati il 23 gennaio scorso a Sardasht, nell’Azerbaijan iraniano, accusati di “mohareb” (nemici di Allah) e “lavat” (sodomia), reati per i quali è prevista l’impiccagione.
“Abbiamo apprezzato pochi giorni fa la relazione che Solana ha presentato al Parlamento europeo sulle relazioni con l'Iran. Visto che nella Risoluzione che abbiamo poi approvato, tra l'altro, condanniamo fermamente le sentenze capitali e le esecuzioni, chiedo a Solana di appoggiare la richiesta del Gruppo EveryOne e di chiedere al presidente iraniano la liberazione dei due ragazzi.”
“Se il presidente iraniano accoglierà questa richiesta, l'Iran darà un bel segnale di dialogo con l'Europa e di attenzione alla Risoluzione adottata dalle Nazioni Unite per una moratoria di tutte le esecuzioni. Salvare la vita di Hamzeh e Loghman potrebbe essere il primo passo per l'eliminazione di tutte le forme di tortura e delle forme di trattamento crudeli, disumane e degradanti che un paese come l'Iran non merita di vedere nel proprio ordinamento”.
