Romanian citizen dies in a carabinieri barracks at Fontana Liri: parliamentary question put forward by senators Poretti and Perduca.
EveryOne Group: “We want light shed on the case”
On May 4, 2008, a 28-eight-year-old Romanian man died after being stopped by the Carabinieri of Fontana Liri in the Frosinone area. The reconstructions of events by the press, (presumed suicide while the man was about to be released by the carabinieri) were not only conflicting, but also highly unlikely: according to an ANSA release on May 4th, the man threw himself out on a window on the second floor of the Fontana Liri station, while according to Il Messaggero in an article published online on the same day and the news agency OMNIROMA, the Romanian threw himself down the stairwell of the building while in the company of a carabiniere in the waiting-room.
On the request of EveryOne Group, who asked for a clarification of the Romanian’s death, a parliamentary question has been forwarded to the Ministers of the Interior and Defence, signed by the Radical senators of the Democratic Party Donatella Poretti and Marco Perduca. “It is highly unlikely that a man ‘in a confused state’ and ‘beside himself’ (to quote ANSA and OMNIROMA) would be deprived of psychological support, and that he would be released by the representatives of the law to flee or commit acts detrimental to his own and/or other people’s safety”. The senators ask what urgent measures the Ministers intend to adopt in order to shed light on the events that led to the man’s death, and if necessary to take legal action against those found responsible. Furthermore, a reliable source from the Fontana Liri local authorities informed the activists of EveryOne Group in a phone call that “no in-depth autopsy was carried out on the Romanian’s body, just a superficial examination of the body by a police doctor of the Procura della Repubblica”.
“We want light shed on this incident” say the leaders of EveryOne, Roberto Malini, Matteo Pegoraro and Dario Picciau. “Several human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have often reported and criticized the abuse carried out by the police force towards immigrants, particularly against Roma and Romanian citizens”, say the activists, “we ourselves have witnessed brutal treatment of Romanians citizens by the police on several occasions. We hope the cause of the man’s death is established and action taken in the event of personal responsibility - and that the voice of truth will prevail now and then over silence.”
