Rome, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights asks Italy to stop driving Roma families out of their camps

During her intervention at the Senate, Ms. Pillay said she was “alarmed at the news of the forced clearances of Roma camps that have taken place all over Italy, actions carried out without a respect for the procedures laid down by the law. The High Commissioner (who over the last few years has had access to documents, witness accounts, videos and photographs of the violation of the Roma people's human rights in Italy) reminded the authorities that policies made concerning the Roma people must be in line with the International laws that protect human rights.
The UN High Commissioner also criticized the conditions in both the authorized and makeshift camps, places where children have no access to regular education as they are forced to move on all the time, thus becoming dispersed, along with their persecuted families. Navi Pillay also stigmatized the laws of the “security package” which discriminate and criminalize migrants; the use of the military and vigilante patrols; and the xenophobic policies that are preventing the creation of a tolerant society in Italy.
